 Looking For Occupation {{ Kiwi! }}
« Thread Started on Jun 15, 2007, 2:28am »

[May 21st, early morning]

He had arrived at Anima Eterna on May 19th, and even found a place to stay and all. But it wasn't till two days later, on the 21st, that he made his way to the Care of Magical Creatures classroom on the third level of the fortress. While he did feel guilty that he had taken all that time, he had his reasons for it.

Firstly, he'd arrived on a Saturday, and taken Sunday for himself. Not for any religious or pressing reason, simply out of costume. He had never worked a Sunday in his life, though of course there were exceptions to everything. And here the pressing exception was that he had never done anything but work, if you could call it that. To Micah it had been merely being alive and doing what he liked to do. Like a hobby that you got paid for doing. Excellent stuff, really.

Secondly, there was a more important thing to do than reporting to the proper professor. He had to scout the grounds and cover it as extensively as possible. He had to know where he was. He'd found his way to the Highest Tower and looked down on the hemisphere of the school that he could glimpse, like an eagle about to swoop down on its territory. Then he had taken special side trips to not only the Lake, but the Forest as well, which had resulted in interesting findings, to say the least.

The species diversity was abundant, which made Micah smile like a loon all day long. For some reason he thought they wouldn't have allowed the self-igniting trees to remain after the fortress had been established and opened its doors to the growing throng of students. That, in and of itself made him edgy at first.

If, like some Japanese ethologists, he was to consider every specimen of a species a different species onto itself, Micah would have found it a tougher task to fully get himself acquainted with the speciation inside the school rather than outside. At least outside the plants and animals were somewhat familiar, though he had never personally visited and studied this area of Italy.

In the two days that he had been here he had observed all sorts of students from all sorts of backgrounds and characters. To call this a rainbow of diversity would have been slightly understating the situation. For rainbows were graduated from one color to another. Instead the student body was startling different, but only on the outside. He soon found there was an undercurrent that united them all, one he couldn't easily define. If there was one thing like a rainbow here, despite the drastic morphological differences, was just that ephemeral unison of thought. Of course, there had to be the exceptions, as there was for any rule that was ultimately true.

He was now looking for the professor, since it was Monday morning and just as good a time to report in for whatever he might be assigned to do. He hoped his visit was expected. He had wandered all this way, through a darkening world, looking for some place he could sense hopeful. This was it, more so than anywhere else he'd been at before. And perhaps, it was exactly because of that unnameable reason he'd observed before.

Truth be told, he wasn't so sure what he wanted to study through whatever work he got here. Plants, magical creatures, or the student body itself. They all seemed vastly interesting, to him at least.

((OOC: I know, backdated. I sowwies that it took me so long to do anything with this charrie. But here he is. Be kindly onto him? :D ))

Daren could relate to having a few days off before really getting into anything, he hardly expected anything less, after all. It’d taken him almost weeks before he’d officially started up his first class. And even then, that had been almost a completely waste of time and energy. But it had been good enough to suffice as a means of getting to know his students, and that had been well established enough with the lessons to follow.

But one way or another, Daren agreed that you could not rush into a new setting and situation and expect yourself to be able to respond well. Getting accustomed to ones setting was most definitely a wise and even invaluable idea.

The Care of Magical Creatures Professor was taking his time slowly going up the stairs, a pile of papers tucked safely under his arm, a cup of tea floating obediently behind him and a biscuit that would float nearer when he desired yet another bite. For the record, anyone could easily find him if they so wished, simply by following the trail of crumbs he was leaving behind.

He was less than alone, with five companions about his person. One, a fluffy, (and despite Daren’s pervious efforts, still had slightly knotted hair) aging cat who had been his companion for many, many years. There were two mini dragons squealing and playfully tossing about in the hair around him, very narrowly missing the biscuit and the tea cup, one ruby red and the other a dark, glittering green. On his left shoulder sat a young phoenix, who patiently and intelligently watched over his shoulder at the paper the Professor was studying and up on his head, burrowed deep within his messy locks was a mouse-like creature soundly asleep.

Daren half wanted to crawl up onto his head himself and fall asleep, things had been so busy lately, but in a good way. Other than the issue with his younger cousin, her friend and a Death Eater, everything had been running smoothly since almost March. Smoothly meaning he was up to his knee’s in having to sort out issues with his Leale’s for various reasons, up to his torso in papers to mark and up to his neck in class-plans.

But he’d much prefer this sort of hectic surrounding than dealing with mysterious deaths or missing people for example, unlike his closest counterpart Professor Zelenko had been. His Leale’s seemed pretty good at keeping themselves out of too much trouble. Sometimes.

Remembering he’d left the door open, Daren was silently glad he wouldn’t have to be doing any key-turning with all the amount of paperwork he was cradling. Coming up to the last step, he noted there was a movement behind the door and his first instinct was to yell,

“HOLY SHIT NOT AGAIN!”

And burst through the door at a hundred miles an hour, almost loosing the animals that occupied spaces on his body in the process. Luckily, they were still able to hold on. “Oh…” Daren muttered, leaving his mouth open just a little too long that the biscuit flew into his mouth and he had to chew it quickly in order to speak again. “Ahh… hello there, thought you were an escaped lesson of mine. No fear, though, false alarm.”

Putting down his papers on his desk, Daren glanced at the state of his classroom, pretty tidy actually. Those detention kids did a good job, and they had made sure to be careful of his barely-dry paintings. Wonderful. Finally with a free hand, he turned around and nodded at his companion, with an arm extended “Daren Telem.”

To say that he had been scared out of his wits was quite an understatement. You didn't just walk into a potentially dangerous room--though he was aware of no danger, and he was always aware--and expect a yell like that to waft by like a faint breeze. Micah recovered himself quickly, though, and turned around to face the professor coming in.

He was young, not that he had expected an old man to teach a vigorous class like this. And he was unusually encumbered with a zoo all about him. Micah could understand the mug and the biscuits, but the phoenix was a bit too much for him. Still, it showed something very important. This dude was definitely the right person when it came to magical creatures.

The excuse or apology was unnecessary, but he accepted it nonetheless, graciously. Smiling simply he merely said, "It's okay." And then he grasped the other's extended hand and shook. "Michael Addison." He waited to see if the name would ring any bells. But as he eyed the stack of papers he decided to simply go on, "I just applied here the other day, as an aide of sorts. Was told either Care of Magical Creatures or Herbology would do just well, since my previous experience and training with the American Ministry covers both."

But for some reason he wasn't so sure suddenly. He masked it well, perfectly. Learning to be impassive was a "shapeshifting" trick he'd learned from an Andean shaman, before he even begun training with the Hopi. So, beneath the lively mask that was every bit himself, attentive and responsive, he engaged in a different sort of dialog with himself.

"Well, you did just apply as an Assistant of sorts, not a Professor. What would you have to teach anyway," said the doubtful voice in his mind, the so called Shadow Self.

"I could teach shamanism, what I've learned. It is a different sort of magic that kids here wouldn't necessary be used to, and perhaps be attracted to," defended his Rational Self, the one he was most usually connected with.

"But you didn't apply for that! What will the Headmistress think? You can't just back out now. Look, pay attention, the good professor might say something important and you might miss it!" The Shadow voice was very derisive.

He returned completely to himself, and waited for the Professor to adjust himself in the classroom and settle down. After all, he wasn't expecting immediate attention. So he just stood there and waited, still examining the classroom. With more senses than one.

It wasn’t normal to see him in such company, one might take refuge to note, although there were very simple reasons for doing so. Daren had noted some of the animals he transported to and fro from either his Office, Shop or the Grounds, were generally less receptive to him when they were confined. Thus was the situation with the proud and ever loyal phoenix, and gave them a sense of liberation within a niche that was interfered by the factor of humans.

“Hmmm…” Daren smiled, continuing to shake the others hand slowly as he tried to figure out whether or not he was supposed to be familiar with this man in some way or another. It’d be so very typical if they’d already met and Daren had failed to remember him. But alas, the Professor assumed that because he offered up his name, it was not the case. “Oooooh!” The male nodded approvingly as he let go of his companions hand, apparently twas the day for little words and being adorned with creatures of all types.

“Well, then what a fantastic position I’m in, huh? I have a teaching aide. I think it’s a smashing idea, thanks. Oh and Herbology too? They are both indeed quite wide subjects that require a lot of-“ Daren paused and frowned at his desk as the green dragon peered over the lip of his mug and extended its tongue into the hot liquid, obviously not having expected the taste and fell in completely from surprise. Quite calmly, Telem lifted the dragon out by the tail and it shook it’s self off with a squeak, “-monitoring and attention. A lot as Aduro just demonstrated for us, eh? Have you met any of the other Professors yet? Other than Monelli obviously. And I’m sure Jason… I mean Professor Messing would be inclined to your help as well.”

Gently guiding the pheonix from his shoulder to his arm, he walked to a perch that he generally used to talk to his class about whatever elected to sit upon there comfortably and rolled his shoulder. It was probably in it’s prime of life that phoenix, seeing it was a little heavy. “So you have no interest in teaching, yourself? Or is it that matter upon which you couldn’t decide which subject to take up?”

Afterwards, the male exclaimed with his arms thrown into the air enthusiastically, “How rude of you Daren! How very dare you, indeed.” Apparently having been scolding himself he glanced up at Michael, “I’m sorry, I haven’t introduced you to our other companions in the room yet.”

So maybe he was a bit out of it when Professor Telem begun firing off the words in his general direction. He snapped back to attention just in time for the dragon's demonstration. Micah had been distracted by the variety of fauna just in this room. He itched to get to know them, to observe them, play with them if they'd let him. They were such beautiful creatures--and he adored dragons. Though he had never been as foolish as confronting a fully grown one. Cute while small... magnificent when grown--and dangerous!

"Yes, I see," he responded to the first comment of being careful and watchful. He'd expected as much.

In his previous occupation he had not necessarily interacted much with children of any age, save for local guides or informants, but he knew very well about being watchful. You either were, or the jungle ate you--alive and kicking and screaming for your life. Raw and bloody. Yeah, the circle of life, alright!

"I haven't met with many, so far. But I will see into locating Professor Messing. Perhaps being an aide to both classes won't be as demanding as I am imagining it to be." So he could rant, as well. Micah was actually smiling now. He'd known of the power in the right smile at the right moment since youth, when just one of those coordinated muscle reactions to mental stimuli had... Well, back on track!

Then Daren flung up his arms and spoke to himself. Micah could not help the chuckle, the dude was an alright guy. He hoped a future friend. All along his trek eastward to investigate the dark forces present in their darkening world, he'd been so vastly alone. Lonely. Back at home he had at least his co-workers that went out for drinks now in a while. Sadly, by now he'd lost most of his meaningful connections to his old life. And to think that he'd once been popular! Well, perhaps the jungle had consumed him in certain ways he'd failed to see before.

"That would be great of you," Micah tried slipping into more casual language. Perhaps too soon. Then again, perhaps not.

Daren would have to agree completely, dragons were likely to be one, if not his favorite creatures that existed. And he adored teaching the kids about them, seeing as his connections with the Dragon Society meant that he was able to get them in and close to the beasts at a personal level. Of course some students didn’t share even a quarter of his enthusiasm, and it was often a task to filter through his students to find the ones who weren’t comfortable with them.

Heaven knows some were too proud to admit their anxiety!

“Yeah well we get along really well, that’s probably because he’s a family friend. And I doubt between the two of us we’ll be too demanding on you. Although I think I’d be the one inclined to borrowing your skills a little more often.” With this Daren patted the man on the shoulder reassuringly. “So where about’s are you from Michael? And pray what lures you to Anima Eterna?”

Telem liked the fact that this fellow was smiling indeed, there was nothing he liked less than finding his companions were like stones and didn’t even allow you the illusion that they were comfortable in your presence. But as nature had it, Daren was also a grin-mad man who couldn’t stop being genial and light when someone was smiling at him. There really was strength in a mere formation of someone’s lips, yes?

“Okay well.” Daren stated, clapping his hands together and preparing himself for the big introductions. “This little guy up here-“ he pointed to the creature still tucked up in his hair, “-is a Garanole, and they grow to be quite large and extremely vivacious. That’s probably because as younglings like this, they sleep just about all the time. So I called him Dopey.”

“And over here is Evig. It’s Danish for Eternal, I think.” He stroked the phoenix, who looked up at her masters companion with intelligent, fiery eyes. “And, oh-“ Well apparently the smaller dragons had already made an introduction, with the green one inspecting Micah’s hand and fingers enthusiastically and the Red one was sitting on Micah’s head, ever so gently tugging at his hair.

“Eh, you’ve already met Aduro, the green one. And Nebulosus, the red one.” Daren laughed as Nebulosus sat up and squeaked loudly at the mention of his name. “Don’t ask me the origin of their names, they actually belong to my cousin, who’s at school here. I’m just babysitting. They were a gift for her eighteenth birthday, they’re miniature, so they won’t grow any bigger. Thank goodness, can you imagine these things running around at full size with natures like that? Talk about chaos.”

Well it was nice to think that he might have a friend forming within the man, because in reality, he really only had Raeka, Elisa and Jason. And really, Jason was his cousins friend, who was far closer to their age anyway. But it’d be nice to be able to talk and relate to someone who appeared of similar disposition really.

“Say, have you explored the setting outside of Anima Eterna at all, yet?”

Micah was a bit taken aback by the question of where he was from. Truth be told he missed his home. Not necessarily the country. For anyone who knew his life history, a big clue as to his patriotic leanings could be found in that he preferred to travel the jungles of Guatemala looking for a mythological herb or beast rather than stay home for the Fourth of July. Really, he wasn't patriotic at all.

America was a totally different country. It wasn't so much that the people had a long history of bigotry and violence against witches and wizards, but the fact that as time passed, the muggles became more and more strident in their "American Nightmare" and elitist. He'd really hoped that it would get better with the years, but conservatives had proven to have amazing lasting powers. And some even rumored that they had certain Dark Wizards on their side, influencing the course of political events.

But home. Not country. Home. "I'm originally from the west coast--the States, that is." Couldn't he tell from the "flat" accent? "And well... I hate to be all doom and gloom, but I noticed how... dark things were getting in the magical world. I decided to find out. Americans are pretty insulated from the rest of the world, as you might suspect. Or know," a sheepish smile that hinted at a possible, but horrible joke. "And so I found myself here. Looking for the good in the--"

The red dragon perched on his head and started playfully tugging at his hair. It made him laugh aloud after the initial shock. He liked his hair short, but that was far from liking it singed off. Still, he soon sensed there was no danger from the little one, and hence the laughter. Then he felt the other one near his hand. It caused him to smile that the creatures were already paying such close and friendly attention to him. Frankly, he'd been a tad bit worried about how they'd react, but had done his best to project an aura of confidence and warmth. That usually worked well. Animals, whether magical or not, were far more intelligent than the regular person would give them credit for. They could sense things humans couldn't even conceptualize with all their neurological science.

"Yes, I rather prefer them small... and not deadly. It would be a nightmare if a fully grown dragon found itself lose and disturbed inside the school," He agreed whole heartedly with Professor Telem.

"And yes, I have! I spent all day yesterday exploring. Though of course I haven't seen everything." Then a nagging question came to him that the attention of the dragons had pushed out of his mind: "Do you have classes today and, if so, when should I expect to start... And doing what exactly? The Headmistress only said I could be of aide. But truthfully, I haven't the faintest clue..."

Truthfully, admitting his... cluelessness... made him feel embarrassed.

It was a problem, Daren also had noted that was springing up around the world. With a great many connections of old friends, and a few in the Ministry, the acknowledgement of Wizards from Muggles' points of view were becoming increasingly biased. The problem was, the majority that exposed their magical-kin to their Muggle neighbours were usually always of the kind who did not care, and would kill someone who had witnessed. Of course with such things, word gets spread and either the rebellion continues or those non-magical folk are deemed crazy.

It seemed as though the world was caught within a tug-of-war in many directions.

Daren could tell, he was apt in recognizing accents and their origins, but he knew from personal experience that someone sounding French, could quite possibly have stemmed from Russia. He had a British accent, but was a great deal Italian blood-wise. Daren laughed slightly, acknowleding the insinuation with a small hint of amusement, careful not to insult the man by doing so. "Yes... it gets to be quite troubling actually. The Ministry seem to be trying to lock down on anything and everything, sink their claws into every aspect of the world they can. The problem is, the less you supress a problem, the bigger the reaction most of the time, right?"

"Ah, ah!" Daren tapped Aduro on the nose as she had her jaw open, although not to bite, but Daren didn't want to intimidate Michael with the over excitement of the pair. Aduro then scampered up Michaels arm and sat on his shoulder, staring at her babysitter that was a little more restrictive than Todd. "Indeed..." Shuddered Daren, "I can only imagine the reaction of my own Dragon, Skyler, in finding that her territory had been invaded. Female dragons, constantly raging." What a raucous, female dragons were so iffy about territory, and so bloody viscious when they wanted to be.

"Ah good, getting familiar with the surroundings is good, I know it took me quite sometime to get used to the whole layout though. So if you need a guide or some help, just ask and I'll be happy to oblige!" He shook his head, "Ahh nope! Not for the rest of today actually, it's my only clearish day throughout the week. But no matter, I'll give you the lowdown of the classes soon enough. Lucky though because we're just beginning to start new topics in each of the classrooms, so that helps with a clean slate for you as well. We'll be looking at... Creatures of The Deep, so namely our own lake. And Dragons for some of the older students, and their magical properties. And also the inter relastionships between humans and these creatures."

Micah felt odd being called by his birth name. He'd adopted the shamanic name so long now that it was like a second skin of sorts, he barely remembered most of the time that it had been his mother who'd named him Michael--like the archangel. A good name, yes, but not one that he identified with any longer. To be entirely truthful, each moment that Daren had called him "Michael" he'd felt like he was back home talking to his parents. Not a bad thing, at all. In fact, it evoked a feeling of homesickness he had not expected to feel here or anywhere in his travels.

And then, of course, there was the fact that the creatures were now flocking on him. Not necessarily a strange phenomena, but these creatures, yeah. Well, there weren't many dragons in the deep jungles of Guatemala or Costa Rica, which he'd remarked upon in a few academic papers he'd written for the American Ministry. For some reason all magical ethologists and zoologists had taken it for granted that with an entirely different and isolated continent new flora and fauna had to be expected as well. But...

He was still listening to Professor Telem's words. He liked the guy and had absolutely no reason for ignoring him. Micah nodded, looking enthusiastic about the offer of a guide to the grounds, and added in, "Maybe we could even take the students in a sort of field-trip."

But no classes today. Good. It would be slightly nerve wracking to start off facing students so soon. And though he could not detect a real difference in age between himself and the Professor--a fact that but him at ease and almost in familiar terms--there was not much of an age difference when it came to the older students, either.

"How much would I be dealing with the students?" He found himself voicing his thoughts without having meant to. Then he added quickly, "Not that I mind, but I am curious."

Micah wondered how the rest of the teachers would be like. So far, so good.

(( Shall we end it soon? Definitely friendship potential here, to be explored later, yes? Okayyyyyyyy! ))
